More than 2,000 classic cars filled Martinsville Speedway Sunday afternoon as part of Motor Trend magazine’s Hot Rod Power Tour.

The stop at the Speedway is the first in the tour’s 25 year history.

We absolutely love it,” Sr. Event Director Michael Deer said. “It’s the first time we’ve been here so there’s a bit of unknowns on both sides, but now we’re here and things are working out fantastic. The thing for me that stands out the most is how passionate the locals are. Several people have come up to me personally to thank me for bring the tour here.

“There’s obviously a rich history here with motorsport and the same thing with Hot Rod Power Tour, being 25 years in, so it’s a really nice partnership.”

Clay Magana drove more than 1,000 miles to be a part of the tour. It’s something he saw years ago, back home in Kansas, and wanted to be a part of. Now, he finds himself wheeling around the country in his 66 Chevelle for the third time.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” Magana said. “I saw the first one when it came through Kansas 25 years ago and I said, ‘I want to do that sometime.’ So, I did it in 2016, without air conditioning, in 2018 with air conditioning and then this year we wanted to do it for the 25 years. We thought that was pretty cool.”

The one-day show is not only a way for people to show off the countless hours they have put into restoring and rebuilding their classic cars, it’s also a way for Martinsville Speedway staff to utilize the facility outside of race weekends.

“We are always looking for ways to use the Speedway throughout the year, but it has to be something that is a good fit,” Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell said. “The Hot Rod Power Tour certainly fit the bill. Having so many classic cars at such a historic facility with an iconic magazine really is the perfect match.”

Next up at Martinsville Speedway is Celebration 2019, the annual Independence Day Celebration on July 4. Admission is free.
