Thomas Closes Out Stellar Weekend With Second To Lead Toyota At Macon POWRi

Toyota Racing

After winning Friday night’s feature at Belle-Clair, Tyler Thomas followed it up with a late charge from fourth to second to lead Toyota at the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League feature at Macon Speedway, Saturday.

Starting from the fourth spot, Thomas would get bumped back to fifth as Daniel Adler took the early lead with 14-year-old Keith Kunz Motorsports (KKM) driver Daison Pursley running second, followed by Jake Neuman in third and Holley Hollan in fourth.

Neuman proved to be the driver on the move as he quickly went by Pursley for second on lap two and then took the lead from Adler on lap five. Behind him, Thomas slipped past Hollan for fourth with Zach Daum climbing up to sixth.

After a caution on lap seven, Thomas would overtake Pursley for third on the restart, with Daum and Jesse Colwell moving up to fifth and sixth. Hollan would recover and make back into the top-five by lap 10, but her hopes for victory would be derailed after a lap 14 incident and she would eventually finish 20th.

Pursley would take advantage of the restart to regain the third position from Thomas, while Neuman continued to pace the field with Adler running second, followed by Pursley, Thomas, Daum and Colwell.

As the laps began to wind down, Neuman opened up a comfortable lead as Thomas started to begin his charge by passing Pursley for third on lap 18. Further back in the field, Colwell would overtake Daum for fifth on lap 19.

Thomas then closed on Adler and as the two battled for second, Neuman took advantage to pull away from the field. Thomas would claim the second spot on lap 21 and then began to close the gap to Neuman, but it would prove to be too little, too late as Neuman would take the checkered flag, followed by Thomas, Adler and the two KKM Toyota teammates, Colwell and Pursley, in fourth and fifth.

Further back, Daum made it four Toyota-powered cars in the top 10 with a seventh.

With his third consecutive top-five finish, Colwell has opened up a 210-point lead over Daum in the championship race.

The POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League is back in action next weekend with the Ironman 55, a two-day show at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55, Friday and Saturday, August 2-3.
