Fans were treated to fast race cars and the smell of rubber tires on June 5-6, as four Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers piloted their cars around Darlington Raceway during a two-day Goodyear Tire Test.
The test sessions were a preview of what’s to come at Darlington Raceway as the Bojangles’ Southern 500 and NASCAR Xfinity Series Sport Clips Haircuts VFW 200 events are quickly approaching on Sept. 1-2.
The test session featured drivers Matt Kenseth, Jamie McMurray, Paul Menard and Daniel Suarez.
The test was free and open to the public, giving fans the opportunity to see NASCAR’s stars race around the high banks of the track Too Tough To Tame.
“It’s been a great two days of testing,” Suarez said. “It’s always good to turn laps at a place like Darlington Raceway, which is a track that’s very difficult to drive on. I love the history of this track and think the throwback weekend they have is great for teams, fans and everyone involved in the sport. I’m excited to get back here on Labor Day weekend in a few short months.”
The test also gave fans the opportunity to view the action from the new bench-style seats that were recently installed in the Colvin Grandstands. The new seats are part of the track’s A Better Darlington facility enhancement project, which is upgrading over 60 percent of its seating areas throughout the grandstands. Construction is currently underway in the Colvin, Tyler, and Wallace grandstands.
The project also includes improved sightlines in the Tyler Tower grandstands and a Wall of Honor, which will pay tribute to the champions at Darlington Raceway.
