Sheldon Creed / No. 18 Friends of Jaclyn Toyota GR Supra Preview – NASCAR Xfinity Series Championship at Phoenix Raceway

NKP #18: Sheldon Creed, Joe Gibbs Racing, Friends of Jaclyn Foundation Toyota Supra

No. 18 Friends of Jaclyn Toyota GR Supra News and Notes:

  • CREED AT PHOENIX: Phoenix is statistically one of Sheldon Creed’s best tracks on the NASCAR Xfinity Series schedule as in six starts he has accumulated three top-fives, five top-10s, and an impressive average finish of 6.3. The 6.3 average finish marks Creed’s best average finish across all tracks that he’s made four starts or more at in his Xfinity Series career. Phoenix is also a special place for Creed as he won the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship in a walkoff win at the track in 2020. In the spring, Creed drove back from the rear of the field following unapproved adjustments in pre-race to finish third.
  • MARTINSVILLE RECAP: Sheldon Creed had an up-and-down day at Martinsville. After qualifying eighth, Creed scored a ninth-place result in stage one and a third-place finish in stage two. Creed appeared to have a shot at the win when he passed teammate Aric Almirola for the lead, which he held and led for 13 laps, but unfortunately Creed had to serve a pit road speeding penalty midway through the final stage which sent him to the tail end of the lead lap. Creed ultimately salvaged the day with a sixth-place finish, but did not have enough time to fully recover from the penalty.
  • TOP FIVE LEADER: Sheldon Creed’s enters Phoenix in a tie with Chandler Smith for the most top-five finishes on the season with 16.
  • TOP TEN LEADER: Creed remains in a tie with Cole Custer for the most top-10s on the year. The two drivers sit atop the season totals with 22 top-10 finishes each.
  • FRIENDS OF JACLYN FOUNDATION: Founded in 2005, the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization with a mission to improve the quality of life for children with pediatric brain tumors and other childhood cancers while raising awareness for said diseases. The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation aims to improve the quality of life for children and their families battling pediatric brain tumors and other childhood cancers by pairing them with local teams, clubs, and community groups. FOJ has currently made over 1000 adoptions and their mission is to continue to raise awareness through our Adopt-A-Child, Safe on the Sidelines, and Guardian Angel Programs.
  • ON THE PITBOX: Crew chief Sam McAulay will lead the No. 18 Toyota GR Supra crew this season. Despite his rookie status, McAulay is an established mind at JGR as he joined the organization in 2007 and worked his way up the ranks from intern to lead race engineer for the No. 11 Cup Series entry of Denny Hamlin. Since the start of his tenure on the No. 11 in 2017, McAulay has contributed to 25 victories, including three Daytona 500 wins and a Coke 600 win as a crew chief when he filled-in for the suspended Chris Gabehart in 2022.
  • JGR AT PHOENIX: Joe Gibbs Racing owns 17 Xfinity Series victories at Phoenix Raceway, including Chandler Smith’s win earlier this year. In 120 combined starts at the track, the organization has tallied 52 top-five finishes, 83 top-10s, 21 pole awards, and 3,534 laps led. Christopher Bell, Kyle Busch, Ty Gibbs, Daniel Hemric, Brandon Jones, Joey Logano, Chandler Smith, and Sammy Smith have all driven JGR Toyotas to Xfinity Series victory lane at Phoenix. Overall, JGR cars have won four of the past six Phoenix races with four different drivers.

Sheldon Creed, Driver of the No. 18 Friends of Jaclyn Toyota GR Supra:

“One last race left in the year. What are your thoughts on your year and how will you approach Phoenix?”

“I was proud of our team this year. We were always near the front and we have the chance to lead the series in top-fives and top-10s this weekend, so it’s hard not to be proud of our effort. The one last box to check is a win, so that’s what we’re going all in on this weekend in Phoenix.”
