Spencer Bayston took the lead in the opening laps and went on to earn his second POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League win of the season at theSpoon River Speedway in Canton, Illinois, on Saturday night. The victory marks the 28th national feature win for a Toyota-powered driver in 2017.
Overall, Bayston has registered four national midget feature event wins this season. He currently leads the National Midget Driver of the Year point standings.
Starting from the fourth position, Bayston quickly moved to the front and by lap six held a lead he would never relinquish.
“It was a good weekend, we were third on Friday and then we were able to get the win tonight in our Keith Kunz Motorsports (KKM) number 97,” said Bayston. “Thank you to Toyota Racing, Keith Kunz, Pete Willoughby, Big Al Scroggins and everyone at KKM.”
KKM teammate Tanner Thorson finished third, while Kenny Brown Racing’s Logan Seavey charged from 11th up to the fourth position to give Toyota three of the top four finishers.
Also impressing on the night was Aidan RoosEvans, who placed sixth, giving the 13-year-old former motorcycle national champion a pair of top-six finishes on the weekend after registering a career-best fifth on Friday night at Jacksonville.
Three more Toyota drivers earned top-10 finishes as Tanner Carrick placed eighth, Holly Shelton was ninth and Tucker Klaasmeyer finished 10th. Zach Daum rounded out the Toyota-powered entries with a 15th-place finish.
Daum continues to hold the point lead, but has seen the gap between he and second-place Seavey decrease to just 50 points with six races remaining. Klaasmeyer remains in third, while Bayston, who currently leads the USAC national title race, moves up to fifth.
The POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League returns to the track next Saturday night at the Southern Illinois Raceway in Marion, Illinois.
