The way Carson Kvapil looks at it, his win in the 125-lap zMAX CARS Late Model Stock Car Tour race that headlined Saturday night’s Autos By Nelson 280 at South Boston Speedway offers a measure of redemption.
“We won this race in 2022, won the SoBo 200 last year and got thrown out, so this is kind of a little bit of redemption to come back here in the CARS Tour and getting a win,” the Mooresville, North Carolina resident explained after his second career South Boston Speedway win.
“It’s great to win here at South Boston. This is one of those tracks I circle every year. I put some emphasis on it. I know we run well here, and I know we have a good cars here.”
The win was Kvapil’s third win of the season on the zMAX CARS Late Model Stock Car Tour and it was worth $7,000.
Much of the race belonged to pole winner Ryan Millington who led the first 100 circuits before Kvapil made a surprise quick dive to the low side on the race’s final restart to get past Millington. Kvapil quickly pulled away from Millington after taking the lead and edged runner-up Treyten Lapcevich of Grimsby, Ontario by 1.819 seconds at the finish, with Millington finishing third after losing second place in the closing laps.
“I knew I just had to bomb it in there and get track position on him to hopefully wash him up the hill and get the lead,” Kvapil pointed out. “I was able to do that. Once I got clear I was able to drive away.”
Millington said he had a good night despite losing the lead late in the race and having to settle for third place.
“Carson tried to do a slide job on me,” said the Statesville, North Carolina resident. “It was a pretty good move, to be honest. To walk out of here with a pole win and a third-place finish is a pretty good night.”
For Lapcevich, the runner-up finish was a good result for his first-ever visit to the .4-mile oval.
“It was a tough one,” Lapcevich said of the 125-lap race. “I just couldn’t get position on the 15 (Millington) earlier in the race to do what I needed to get around him. It sucks coming home second, but I had a lot of fun at South Boston Speedway for my first time here. I’m real excited to come back next year.”
NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series racer and former South Boston Speedway and NASCAR national champion Layne Riggs of Bahama, North Carolina finished fourth after being in the hunt the entire race and Brenden Queen of Chesapeake, Virginia rounded out the top five finishers.
Mini Tyrell of Manassas, Virginia, series points leader Connor Hall of Hampton, Virginia, 2024 South Boston Speedway champion Peyton Sellers of Danville, Virginia, Buddy Isles Jr. of Littleton, North Carolina, and former South Boston winner Bobby McCarty of Madison, North Carolina rounded out the top 10 finishers in the 125-lap race.
Only two races remain to decide the championship in the zMAX CARS Late Model Stock Car Tour.
Spencer Davis Wins 100-lap zMAX CARS Pro Late Model Tour Race
Spencer Davis of Dawsonville, Georgia earned his second win of the season on the zMAX CARS Pro Late Model Tour and his first career CARS Tour win at South Boston Speedway Saturday night in the 100-lap race for the zMAX CARS Pro Late Model Tour that was the co-feature race of Saturday night’s Autos By Nelson 280 at South Boston Speedway.
Davis took the lead from Tristan McKee of Hampton, Virginia with 26 laps to go and crossed the finish line 1.384 seconds ahead of McKee to take the win.
Caden Kvapil of Mooresville, North Carolina, Kaden Honeycutt of Aledo, Texas and T.J. DeCaire of Land O’ Lakes, Florida rounded out the top five finishers.
There were three lead changes between Spencer and McKee, with McKee leading twice for a total of 55 laps and Davis leading twice for a total of 45 laps.
The race was slowed by four caution periods and one red flag.
Jacob StatenCaptures Win In The 25-Lap INEX U.S. Legend Car Race
Michigan native Jacob Staten, now a North Carolina resident, took the lead from Virginian Daniel Silvestri with nine laps to go and won the 30-lap INEX Legend Car race Saturday night at South Boston Speedway.
The race was the first INEX U.S. Legend Car race at South Boston Speedway in 12 years.
Silvestri battled Staten hard throughout the race, but trailed Staten by .659-second at the finish.
Isaac Kitzmiller, Keelan Harvick, the 11-year-old son of NASCAR Cup Series Champion Kevin Harvick, and Nicholas Bulkeley rounded out the top five finishers.
There were two lead changes in the race with Staten leading twice for a total of 26 laps and Silvestri leading once for a total of four laps.
Tyler Warriner Takes Win In The 25-Lap Tyler Roach Memorial Virginia Mini Cup Race
Tyler Warriner of Glen Allen, Virginia scored a flag-to-flag win in the 25-lap Tyler Roach Memorial Race for the competitors of the Virginia Mini Cup Racing Association.
Noah Matthews, a senior at Glen Allen, Virginia High School, made a strong run at Warriner in the closing laps only to be edged out by Warriner by a .201-second margin at the finish.
Zach Sprouse of Stafford, Virginia, the 2022 and 2023 points runner-up, finished third with Johnny Shonk of Chesterfield, Virginia and JoJo Fadke of Roselawn, Indiana completing the top five finishers in the 14-car field.
The Virginia Mini Cup Racing Association features ½-scale stock cars that compete at tracks throughout Virginia and North Carolina. The series is celebrating 28 years of racing this year.
Next Race At South Boston Speedway
The stars and cars of the SMART Modified Tour powered by Pace-O-Matic will return to South Boston Speedway for a second visit this season on Saturday afternoon, October 12 for an event that will serve as the next-to-last event of the season for the series.
Headlining the afternoon’s action is a 99-lap race for SMART Modified Tour powered by Pace-O-Matic. The Southern Ground Pounders Vintage Racing Club will serve as a support division for the event. An additional support series will be named later.
The Saturday, October 12 SMART Modified Tour event will be an afternoon event. The full event schedule will be announced at a later date.
