Tidbits to know about NASCAR Cup Series Playoff Race #2

The 2024 season marks the first-time the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs’ second race has been hosted by Watkins Glen International and this is the first-time Watkins Glen has hosted a Playoff race in its history.

Watkins Glen International is the second road course to host a Playoff race in the NASCAR Cup Series, joining the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL (2018-2024).

Watkins Glen International is the fifth different track in NASCAR Cup Series to host the second race of the Playoffs; joining Dover Motor Speedway (2004-2010), New Hampshire Motor Speedway (2011–2017), Richmond Raceway (2018-2021) and Kansas Speedway (2022-2023).

A total of 15 different drivers have won the second race of the Playoffs, led by Jimmie Johnson with three wins (2005, 2009, 2010); followed by Kyle Busch (2017, 2018), Matt Kenseth (2013, 2015) and Martin Truex Jr. (2019, 2021) with two victories each.

23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick is the most recent winner of the second race of the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs, taking the win last season at Kansas Speedway (9/10/23).

  • Drivers bolded went on to win title that season.

Three times the winner of the second race in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs has gone on to win the overall championship – 2009, 2010 and 2011.

When Dover Motor Speedway hosted the second race of the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs (2004-2010), twice the winning driver went on to win the series title – Jimmie Johnson (2009 and 2010).

When New Hampshire Motor Speedway moved to the second race in the Playoffs (2011-2017), only one driver won the event and went on to win the title – Tony Stewart (2011). Stewart won five races in the 2011 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs (a series-record tied with Kyle Larson, 2021) including the first two (Chicago and New Hampshire).

None of the Playoff winners at Richmond Raceway (2018-2021) or Kansas Speedway (2022-2023), when hosting the second race of the Playoffs, went on to win the title in the same season.

The worst finish by a driver in the second race of the NASCAR Cup Series Playoff schedule that went on to win the title that same season was:

  • At Dover Motor Speedway – the 2005 series champion, Tony Stewart, finished 18th.
  • At New Hampshire Motor Speedway – the 2015 series champion, Kyle Busch, finished 37th.
  • At Richmond – the 2018 series champion, Joey Logano, finished 14th.
  • At Kansas Speedway – the 2022 series champion, Joey Logano, finished 17th.
  • Last season, Ryan Blaney finished 12th at Kansas and went on to win the title.

In 2022, 23XI Racing’s Bubba Wallace became the first non-Playoff driver to win the second race of the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs’ schedule (2004-2023). Wallace was ranked 20th in the standings at the time of the win.

Since the inception of the ‘elimination-style’ format in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs (2014-Present), six of the 10 winners of the second race of the Playoffs has earned a spot in the Championship 4 Round:

  • 2014 – Joey Logano (New Hampshire)
  • 2017 – Kyle Busch (New Hampshire)
  • 2018 – Kyle Busch (Richmond)
  • 2019 – Martin Truex Jr. (Richmond)
  • 2020 – Brad Keselowski (Richmond)
  • 2021 – Martin Truex Jr. (Richmond)

Team Penske’s Joey Logano first to move on to the Round of 12

The entire Team Penske organization showed up to Atlanta ready for business, and the results are proof of the effort – all three Team Penske drivers led laps and finished in the top-10, including Joey Logano taking the first win of the Playoffs and earning himself a spot in the Round of 12.

Two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, Joey Logano, is now the first and only driver to earn a spot in the Round of 12 following the Playoff opener at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Surprisingly, this is the first-time in his 11 postseason appearances he has won the first race of the Playoffs. Also, interestingly, Logano was eliminated in the Round of 16 in 2023, becoming the first defending Cup Series Champion to be eliminated in the first round of the Playoffs.

Maybe it’s the year that matters. It seems even year seasons are the one’s Logano’s tends to perform at a higher-level in the postseason, since the introduction of the ‘elimination style’ Playoffs in 2014 (2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022) Logano has earned a spot in the Championship 4 Round.

Looking to Watkins Glen on Sunday, Logano has made 14 series starts putting up one win (2015), four top fives and seven top 10s. He finished 10th at Watkins Glen last season.

Comers & Goers: Playoff standings shuffle after Week 1 of the postseason

The NASCAR Cup Series driver standings have been shaken-up following the Playoff opener at Atlanta Motor Speedway with some competitors making positive moves and some looking to rebound after Week 1.

Positive Standings Movers:

Five postseason competitors moved up three spots or more in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoff outlook following Atlanta – Race winner Joey Logano (+8 positions, 1st), Ryan Blaney (+3 positions, 2nd), Alex Bowman (+6 positions, 6th), Austin Cindric (+3 positions, 7th) and Ty Gibbs (+3 positions, 12th).

Ryan Blaney is currently ranked second in the Playoff outlook, up 45 points on Round of 12 cutoff. The biggest point leads over the NASCAR Cup Series Round of 12 cutline after the first race of the Playoffs to miss advancing was 26 points by Kurt Busch in 2021, and the second-most was 23 points by Tyler Reddick in 2022. Blaney has advanced to the Round of 12 in six of his previous seven Playoff appearances, the lone exception was 2020 when he was eliminated in the Round of 16.

Also, it was a good points day at Atlanta for four drivers who gained 20 or more points on the Round of 12 cutline – Ryan Blaney (+32), Alex Bowman (+27), Austin Cindric (+25) and Daniel Suarez (+21).

Looking To Rebound In The Standings

With several drivers moving up the Playoff outlook, in return some have to move down four drivers lost three or more spots in the Playoff outlook following Atlanta – No. 1 seed entering the Playoffs Kyle Larson (-9 positions, 10th), Denny Hamlin (-5 positions, 11th), Brad Keselowski (-5 positions, 13th) and Chase Briscoe (-3 positions, 16th).

Two driver lost more than 20 points on the Round of 12 cutline after Atlanta – Kyle Larson (-20 points) and Chase Briscoe (-21 points). Both drivers were caught in an early incident at Atlanta and finished 37th and 38th, respectively.

Teetering the Round of 12 cutline JGR’s Ty Gibbs looks for first win at Watkins Glen

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Ty Gibbs has been having a strong sophomore season making the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs for the first-time, and now the 21-year-old is looking to get his first win and advance to the Round of 12. Looking at Gibbs’ stats heading into this weekend, and Watkins Glen could be the place he get his first trip to Victory Lane.

This season, Gibbs is still looking for his first NASCAR Cup Series career victory but has managed to put up seven top fives and 11 top 10s in his 27 starts.

Heading into this weekend at Watkins Glen, Gibbs is ranked 12th in the Playoff standings outlook, just one point up on 2012 series champion and RFK Racing’s owner/driver Brad Keselowski in 13th – the first spot outside the Round of 12 cutoff, and 16 points up on Wood Brothers Racing’s Harrison Burton in 14th. Gibbs has been solid the road courses this season finishing in the top-five in four of the last five road course races, all but Sonoma this year.

The driver of the No. 54 Toyota, Gibbs, finished fifth at Watkins Glen last season in the Cup Series and has won at the 2.45-mile course in the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2021. If Gibbs were to win this Sunday at Watkins Glen, he would become the fifth different driver to earn their first win at the historic road course, joining Steve Park, Marcos Ambrose, AJ Allmendinger and Chase Elliott.

Below The Cutoff: The four drivers fighting to stay in the Playoffs at Watkins Glen

With one Playoff race in the books and two to go, Brad Keselowski (13th), Harrison Burton (14th), Martin Truex Jr. (15th) and Chase Briscoe (16th) find themselves below the NASCAR Cup Series Round of 12 cut line needing to bounce back this weekend at Watkins Glen International.

RFK Racing’s is one of two former Cup champions (2012 Keselowski & 2017 Truex) that are at risk of being eliminated in the first round after Atlanta. Keselowski is only one point back from Joe Gibbs Racing Ty Gibbs in 12th and just two points back Gibbs teammate Denny Hamlin in 11th, after he finished 19th in the Playoff opener. In his previous nine appearances in the Playoffs since the introduction of the ‘elimination-style’ format in 2014, Keselowski has advanced to the Round of 12 all nine times (2023, ’21, ’20, ’19, ’18, ’17, ’16, ’15, ’14).

Wood Brothers Racing’s Harrison Burton, in his first Playoff appearance this season, is 14th in the Playoff outlook after finishing 31st at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The 23-year-old from Huntersville, North Carolina, Burton, is 16 points back from Gibbs in 12th and 18 points back from Hamlin in 11th. The furthest the Wood Brothers Racing No. 21 Ford team has advanced in the Playoffs is to the Round of 8 in 2017 with driver Ryan Blaney. This season is the third-time the No. 21 Wood Brothers team has earned a spot in the Cup Playoffs (Ryan Blaney in 2017, Matt DiBenedetto in 2020 and Harrison Burton in 2024).

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Martin Truex Jr. is on a nine-race skid dating back to Nashville where he has finished 24th or worse in eight of the races, the lone exception was an eighth-place finish at Pocono. To start the Playoffs, he finished 35th at Atlanta. Now, the 2017 series Champion heads to Watkins Glen ranked 15th in the Playoff outlook down 19 points from his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Ty Gibbs in 12th and 21 points back from Hamlin in 11th. In Truex’s previous eight appearances in the Playoffs since the introduction of the ‘elimination-style’ format in 2014, he has advanced to the Round of 12 all eight times (2023, ’21, ’20, ’19, ’18, ’17, ’16, ’15).

Stewart-Haas Racing’s Chase Briscoe was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was caught-up with No. 1 seed Kyle Larson in an incident early in the race that relegated the SHR driver to a 38th-place finish at Atlanta. Looking to climb from the basement of the Playoffs’ standings, Briscoe heads to Watkins Glen 21 points back from Ty Gibbs in 12th and 23 points back from Denny Hamlin in 11th. In Briscoe’s only other NASCAR Cup Series Playoff appearance he advanced to the Round of 8 (2022).

New York State Of Mind: NASCAR and Watkin Glen

Pressures to make the next round of the Playoffs are mounting as the NASCAR Cup Series prepares for the Go Bowling at The Glen at Watkins Glen International, this Sunday, September 15 at 3 p.m. ET on the USA Network, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Channel 90).

Watkins Glen International is the fourth of five road courses on the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series schedule; alongside Circuit of The Americas (Winner: William Byron), Sonoma Raceway (Kyle Larson) and the Chicago Street Race (Alex Bowman). After this weekend, the only road course left on the 2024 schedule will be the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL on Oct. 13, 2024.

This weekend will mark the 41st running of a NASCAR Cup Series race on the historic 2.45-mile asphalt multi-elevational Watkins Glen International road course located near Watkins Glen, New York in the Finger Lakes region of the state.

Watkins Glen is famously known for the first post-war street race in the country, and the annual event was held from 1948-1951. After several events were held on the streets of Watkins Glen at a temporary facility, a permanent facility was opened in 1956 in the town of Dix, which borders Watkins Glen. In 1956, a 2.3-mile track was designed and constructed.

The first NASCAR Cup Series race at Watkins Glen International was on August 4, 1957 and won by owner/driver Buck Baker with an average speed of 83.064 MPH driving a 1957 Chevrolet. Baker led all 44 laps in the inaugural event.

Over the years, the Cup Series has changed the race length at Watkins Glen three times. The first NASCAR Cup Series race at Watkins Glen was scheduled for 101.2 miles in 1957, the second race was 161.7 miles (1964), and the third race was 151.8 miles (1965). Every race since has been scheduled for 220.5-miles (90 laps).

In 1992, the Inner Loop Chicane (a.k.a. the Bus Stop) was added to the layout giving Watkins Glen International its 2.45 distance. The famous Watkins Glen International road course underwent a repave in 2015, first complete repave since 1989. And new for this season, NASCAR has added new rumble strips and interchangeable curbing to the Inner Loop Chicane (Bus Stop).

In total 305 different drivers have competed at Watkins Glen in the NASCAR Cup Series in the previous 40 series races producing 22 different poles winners and 25 different race winners.

Five former Watkins Glen pole winners entered this weekend

A total of 13 different starting positions have led to victories in the NASCAR Cup Series at Watkins Glen International. The pole or first starting position is the most proficient starting position in the field, producing more winners (10) than any other starting position at Watkins Glen International in the NASCAR Cup Series (25%).

NASCAR Hall of Famers Dale Earnhardt (1990, ’92, ‘96), Mark Martin (1993, ’94, ‘95) and Jeff Gordon (1998, ’03, ‘14) lead the NASCAR Cup Series in poles at Watkins Glen International with three poles each.

Richard Childress Racing’s Kyle Busch (2011 and 2017) and Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott (2019 and 2022) lead all active drivers in poles at Watkins Glen with two each.

This weekend, five of the 22 NASCAR Cup Series pole winners at Watkins Glen International are entered in the Go Bowling at The Glen – Chase Elliott, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, AJ Allmendinger and Juan Pablo Montoya.

Watkins Glen’s all-time Cup road ringers

For a long time in NASCAR road racing was a niche that not every driver mastered. Now a days, road course racing makes up 13.8% of the schedule (five events) and this year for the first time two road courses are in the Playoffs, making this weekend that much more important to the competitors’ championship runs.

The one driver that has mastered Watkins Glen International better than everyone else, is NASCAR Hall of Famer Tony Stewart, who leads the NASCAR Cup Series in victories at Watkins Glen with five wins (2002, ’04, ’05, ’07 and ’09)

The series record for most road course wins at a single track is six, held by NASCAR Hall of Famer Bobby Allison at Riverside International Raceway (1971, ’73, ’75, ’79, ’81 sweep).

Hendrick Motorsports teammates Chase Elliott (2018, 2019) and Kyle Larson (2021, 2022) and Richard Childress Racing’s Kyle Busch (2008, 2013) lead all active NASCAR Cup Series drivers in wins at Watkins Glen International with two victories each.

Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron is the most recent winner at the 2.45-mile track, winning last season’s event by 2.632-seconds over second-place Denny Hamlin.

This weekend, nine of the 25 NASCAR Cup Series winners at Watkins Glen International are entered in Sunday’s race.
