Two-time NASCAR national champion Peyton Sellers of Danville, Virginia captured a record-tying seventh South Boston Speedway NASCAR Late Model Stock Car Division championship with a third-place finish Saturday night in the 150-lap Sentara Health Late Model Stock Car Division race that headlined the Halifax County Farm Bureau Championship Night event at South Boston Speedway.

Sellers, who last won the South Boston Speedway title in 2021, tied former seven-time champion David Blankenship of Moseley, Virginia who won his record-setting seventh and last South Boston Speedway title in 1998.

“It’s been a long time coming finishing second the last two years,” Sellers remarked. “To tie David Blankenship is very, very special in my heart and my brother, H.C.’s heart. We grew up watching him and thinking a lot of him. For us to do this and represent Halifax County and South Boston Speedway as champions means a lot to me.”

While Sellers won the championship, last year’s South Boston Speedway champion, Carter Langley of Zebulon, North Carolina, became the seventh winner of the season at South Boston Speedway by winning the 150-lap Sentara Health Late Model Stock Car Division race and claiming the $5,000 winner’s prize.

The win was Langley’s first win of the season at South Boston Speedway and his eighth win of the season.

Langley won the 2023 edition of this event to claim the division championship and successfully defended his race win from last season.

“It’s nice to end the South Boston Speedway season the same way I did last year, other than the championship,” Langley said. “I think the car might have been a little better than it was last year.”

Langley was concerned when Mike Looney took the lead from him on the 59thcircuit and pulled away while leading until the mandated break at lap 100. He wrestled the lead from Looney on the restart that followed the break at lap 100 and pulled away to a 2.216-second win over Looney, a resident of Catawba, Virginia.

“I got really aero tight behind him,” Langley explained. “We made a big change at the break, and the car definitely took off after that.”

Sellers finished third with NASCAR Xfinity Series competitor Jeb Burton of Halifax, Virginia finishing fourth. Burton competed in a NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Darlington, South Carolina Saturday afternoon and arrived at South Boston Speedway in time to compete in the race. Jacob Borst of Elon, North Carolina rounded out the top five finishers. Pole winner Blake Stallings of Danville, Virginia finished sixth.

The race was a competitive affair with six lead changes among four drivers with Langley leading three times for a total of 97 laps. Three caution periods slowed the race.

Jason Myers Wins Race, Claims Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division Title

Jason Myers of Hurt, Virginia successfully defended his 2023 South Boston Speedway Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division championship Saturday night with a flag-to-flag win in the 50-lap race that was part of the Halifax County Farm Bureau Championship Night event at South Boston Speedway.

In what was one of the closest division championship points races in the track’s history, Myers entered the race trailing Eric Winslow of Pelham, North Carolina by one point with Nathan Crews of Long Island, Virginia sitting in third place nine points out of the lead.

By winning the race, Myers edged Winslow by one point in the championship chase.

Crews was involved in an early-race crash and finished 14th in the 16-car field.

Myers edged Winslow in the race by a 1.122-seeond margin with Karl Budzevski finishing third, and brothers Justin Dawson and Drew Dawson, both of Nathalie, Virginia, rounding out the top five finishers.

Myers won the $100 Roof Masters Pole Award and Winslow won the $100 Roof Masters Hard Charger Award.

Two caution periods slowed the action.

B.J. Reaves Wins Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division Championship

A new champion carved his name into the South Boston Speedway record books Saturday night as B.J. Reaves of South Boston, Virginia emerged with the 2024 Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division championship.

Reaves claimed the division championship by finishing second and first respectively in the two 15-lap Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division races that were part of the Halifax County Farm Bureau Championship Night event at South Boston Speedway.

The division championship chase took an unexpected swing as defending division champion Johnny Layne of Halifax, Virginia, who scored his 30th career win in the division on August 17, has commanded the division this season. He has five wins in seven starts, has won the most poles, led the most laps and has never finished outside of the top five.

Layne, a three-time division champion held an 11-point lead over B.J. Reaves and an 18-point edge over Zach Reaves of Danville, Virginia heading into the twin 15-lap races for the Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division.

However, Layne did not compete in the season’s final event due to a family commitment, opening the door for B.J. Reaves and Zach Reaves to battle it out for the division championship.

“I’ll take one night short, end up wherever I end up in points, and I’ll be excited for whoever wins it,” Layne said after his win in the August 17 race.

“I support both of them,” Layne said of the Reaves brothers.

Scott Phillips of Halifax, Virginia scored a flag-to-flag win in the first of the two 15-lap races to earn his first win of the season. B.J. Reaves, Zach Reaves, Kendall Milam of Keeling, Virginia and Bruce Mayo of Halifax, Virginia rounded out the top five finishers.

In the nightcap, B.J. Reaves wrestled the lead away from Dillon Davis of Nathalie, Virginia to capture his second win of the season and the division championship. Davis finished second, Phillips finished third, Milam finished fourth and Colby Pool of South Boston, Virginia completed the top five finishers.

Jordaine Penick Captures Virginia State Police HEAT Hornets Title

Sixteen-year-old Jordaine Penick of Meherrin, Virginia added another milestone in South Boston Speedway’s history book Saturday night with her fifth-place finish in the division’s 20-lap race earning her the Virginia State Police HEAT Hornets Division championship.

Penick is the second female driver to win a South Boston Speedway division championship and the first to do so in 20 years. Terri Marks, who won the track’s Grand Stock Division championship in 2004, was in attendance to congratulate Penick on her big accomplishment.

Penick held a nine-point edge over her teammate, 15-year-old Max Sangillo of Farmville, Virginia entering the race. Sangillo finished ninth in the race.

Jason DeCarlo of Nelson, Virginia won the 20-lap race to claim his second win in a row and his third victory of the season. He edged Cameron Goble of Ringgold, Virginia by 1.7 seconds to claim the win.
Cameron Moss of Danville, Virginia, pole winner and early-race leader Dustin Davis of Nathalie, Virginia and Penick rounded out the top five finishers.
