Nathan Crews is rapidly trending toward the top of South Boston Speedway’s Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division.
Crews, now in his second season of competing in the division, has won the last three races in a row and has climbed into third place in the division point standings, six points behind division leader Jason Myers and three points behind second-place driver Eric Winslow entering the twin 30-lap races that will be part of the Boone Tractor Race Night presented by Billy’s A/C Service event on Saturday night, July 13 at South Boston Speedway.
Prior to his most recent win on June 29, Crews’ best finish through the season’s first four races was a pair of sixth-place finishes.
“This isn’t quite where we want to be,” Crews remarked, “but it seems like we’ve got pretty good momentum. I feel like we could be better.
“We’re just now starting to make sure we’re staying on top of everything,” he continued. “We had a few mistakes earlier in the year that cost us some wins. I feel we’ve had the car to win every race this season. Sometimes we just weren’t at the right place at the right time. We’re trying to improve on that.”
The two-time former Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division champion and his team are laser-focused on their attempt to win the Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division championship.
“We’re a little bit behind where we want to be with that,” Crews pointed out. “We’re going to keep taking it one race at a time. We’re putting all of our focus on each race each night and trying to be the best we can be in that particular race on that particular night with whatever the outcome may be.”
Riding the wave of momentum from his three consecutive wins Crews feels he has a legitimate shot at the division championship.
“I think we’ve got a good shot at it,” Crews said. “Jason (points leader Jason Myers) is really strong. Anything can happen. Hopefully, if I keep doing what I need to do and check all my boxes it will all work out and we will wind up on top at the end of the season, if not sooner.”
Crews knows winning the championship is a big challenge and that he will need more race wins to reach the top of the division.
“I think it’s going to take two or three more wins before we can take over the points lead,” Crews noted. “However, that depends on how Jason finishes too. Either way, we’re going to keep competing for wins. My biggest goal is to win every race, and if not, finish the best we can finish for points.”
The Long Island, Virginia resident said winning the Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division championship would mean a great deal.
“I want to win it because it is something my dad did back when he was racing,” Crews said noting that his father, Bruce Crews, won the 1995 Street Stock Division title (the forerunner of the Limited Sportsman Division) at South Boston Speedway. “It would be pretty cool to win a championship like he won one. It would be special for my team, my family and my sponsors. The biggest reason I want to do it is for my team. This is the best team I’ve ever had, and each one gives me 110 percent every week. If it wasn’t for those guys, I wouldn’t be able to race.”
The six-race Boone Tractor Race Night presented by Billy’s A/C Service event on Saturday night July 13 will be headlined by twin 65-lap races for the Sentara Health Late Model Stock Car Division and will include twin 30-lap races for the Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division, a 25-lap race for the Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division and a 20-lap race for the Virginia State Police HEAT Hornets Division.
The Boone Tractor Race Night presented by Billy’s A/C Service event schedule has registration and pit gates opening at 2 p.m. Practice will start at 3:30 p.m. and run until 5:15 p.m. Frontstretch spectator gates will open at 3:30 p.m. and trackside parking gates will open at 5:30 p.m. Qualifying is set for 6 p.m., pre-race ceremonies are scheduled for 6:45 p.m. and the first race of the night is set for a 7 p.m. start.

Tickets at the gate on race day will be $15 each. Seniors ages 65 and older, military, healthcare workers, and students (with ID) can purchase tickets for $12 each at the gate on race day.
