No. 18 MRC Construction Toyota GR Supra News and Notes:

  • CREED AT SONOMA: Sheldon Creed will make his second career Xfinity Series start at Sonoma this weekend in the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota GR Supra. In his first start at the track last year, Creed qualified third and scored stage points in the first stage with a ninth-place finish before ultimately ending the day in 11th.
  • PORTLAND RECAP: Creed had a strong showing for most of the day in Portland. After starting sixth, Creed was a mainstay in the top-five for the majority of the race, chaptered by a third and second place finish in the first two stages and highlighted by taking the lead for two laps early in stage three. Creed seemed prime to be in contention for the win, but on the penultimate restart, Creed was black flagged for a restart violation, relegating him to the back of the field late in the race. Creed rallied in the closing laps to salvage a 13th place finish, but unfortunately the result was not reflective of the speed the team showed throughout the day.
  • NEW SPONSOR, NEW SCHEME IN SONOMA: Michael Roberts Construction will join Joe Gibbs Racing for their first race of the season this weekend in Sonoma. The California-based construction company is no stranger to NASCAR or Sonoma as their bright orange paint scheme was seen in victory lane with fellow JGR driver Aric Almirola last year when he won the Xfinity race last year with RSS Racing.
  • ON THE PITBOX: Crew chief Sam McAulay will lead the No. 18 Toyota GR Supra crew this season. Despite his rookie status, McAulay is an established mind at JGR as he joined the organization in 2007 and worked his way up the ranks from intern to lead race engineer for the No. 11 Cup Series entry of Denny Hamlin. Since the start of his tenure on the No. 11 in 2017, McAulay has contributed to 25 victories, including three Daytona 500 wins and a Coke 600 win as a crew chief when he filled-in for the suspended Chris Gabehart in 2022.
  • JGR AT SONOMA: Joe Gibbs Racing earned a top-five finish and a pair of top-10s in last season’s inaugural Xfinity Series race at Sonoma Raceway. Ty Gibbs led the team with a fourth-place result.

Sheldon Creed, Driver of the No. 18 Friends of Jaclyn Foundation Toyota GR Supra:

“What are your thoughts on Sonoma this weekend with the track being repaved over the offseason?”

“I’m optimistic about it. We’ve only run there once on the old surface so it’s not crazy to think there could be some wild cards that come into play, but ultimately I think you’ll see familiar faces at the front relative to the other road courses we’ve ran this year. I felt really good about our speed at COTA and Portland last week, so I’m excited to get out there and see what we have.”
