Doug Kalitta and the Mac Tools Toyota Top Fuel team will be returning to Bandimere Speedway this weekend for the 42nd NHRA Mile High Nationals, one of the longest running races on the Camping World Drag Racing Series. Kalitta Motorsports as a team has a storied history at the track carved into the side of the mountains just outside of Denver with team owner Connie Kalitta and his son Scott Kalitta recognized as multi-time Top Fuel winners. Throughout his career Doug Kalitta has raced to six final rounds at the Mile High Nationals with one victory in 2010 and his most recent final round appearance in 2018.
“The Kalittas have a lot of history at the Mile High Nationals for sure,” said Kalitta, a 49-time Top Fuel national event winner. “The Bandimere family has done an awesome job with this track and promoting this race. It is a one of the biggest races of the season and we are looking forward to starting the Western Swing this weekend.”
The three race Western Swing begins with the Mile High Nationals this weekend and then travels to Sonoma, California before concluding in Seattle, Washington. Kalitta has enjoyed success at all three locations and a second victory at Bandimere Speedway would put him in line to possibly sweep the swing.
“Getting three wins in a row anytime is quite an accomplishment but to sweep the Western Swing would be a great achievement,” said Kalitta. “We have a race car that can win races and we just need to translate our qualifying success to race day success.”
Throughout the season Kalitta’s Mac Tools Top Fuel team has made the most of qualifying and they have turned on corner on race day. Over the past four races Kalitta has advanced to the quarterfinals three times. The team grabbed the No. 1 qualifier earlier this season at the Arizona Nationals. In 2002 Kalitta had the quickest dragster in qualifying for the Mile High Nationals. Currently, sitting in ninth place in the point standings the Mac Tools team has the teams just in front of them within striking distance.
“There are a bunch of teams grouped together in the bottom half of the Top Ten and we are definitely looking to make a move to get up in the points,” said Kalitta. “There are six races to go before the Countdown starts and we want to get as close to No. 1 as possible for the playoffs.”
In addition to Mac Tools Kalitta’s dragster will highlight enhanced branding from Revchem Composites during the Western Swing. As an industry leading composite materials distributor and technical resource Revchem is involved with many industries, from surfing to aerospace and everything in between. The company was an integral part of the Toyota GR Supra Funny Car redesign and continues to make contributions to the team throughout the season.
