TOYOTA NHRA: DeJoria, Brown Lead Toyota In Charlotte Four-Wide Qualifying

Alexis DeJoria qualified second in her ROKiT Toyota Camry Funny Car, while Antron Brown placed sixth in his Matco Tools Toyota Top Fuel dragster Funny Car to lead Toyota in qualifying heading into Sunday’s NGK NTK NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway.

DeJoria turned in the fastest pass on Friday with a 3.930-second run, then was fourth-quick in Saturday’s final session. It marks the third time she’s qualified in the top three in the season’s first four events.  She will race point leader Bob Tasca, Blake Alexander and Robert Hight in her opening quad on Sunday.

Not far behind in Funny Car was J.R. Todd who placed fourth overall. Todd ran the third-quickest pass in the third qualifying session to capture one bonus point. The DHL Toyota driver squares off with Tim Wilkerson, Jim Campbell and Terry Haddock in round one of eliminations.

Mike McIntire rounded out the Camry Funny Car drivers with an impressive eighth. He’ll join John Force, Dave Richards and Dale Creasy in round one.

Brown was the lead Toyota in Top fuel with a 3.761-second pass that he registered on Friday night on the way to eventually placing sixth. After winning in Atlanta, he will be looking for his second consecutive win on Sunday, opening up with fellow Toyota driver Shawn Langdon, Leah Pruett and Krista Baldwin. After qualifying 11th, Langdon will be looking for  his second straight Charlotte Four-Wide victory, after winning at zMax Dragway in Funny Car in 2019.

Doug Kalitta qualified 12th and opens eliminatons with Billy Torrence, Josh Hart and Kyle Wurzel.

Sunday’s Camping World Drag Racing Series eliminations will be televised on FS1 beginning at 6 p.m. (ET).

Alexis DeJoria: “At the last race in Atlanta, we couldn’t get off the line and here we came out on Friday as provisional number one qualifier. That felt incredibly good – from zero to hero. We were on a really good run, but we dropped a cylinder and the car shut off and still ran 3.93. The ROKiT Toyota guys always give me a car. Now we need to get some win lights on Sunday. We desperately need to go some rounds. We get great points in qualifying, but it would be nicer to get some points on Sunday.”

Antron Brown: “The weekend is going good so far for this Matco Tools team with Toyota and all of our other partners like SirusXM and Global Electronic (Technology) and Hangsterfers out here supporting us this weekend at the Four-Wide. We wanted to qualify better and we did that. We were the fourth quickest on Friday night and we didn’t even make it all the way down. We’ve been working on some things and you can see in the demeanor of this entire team and all the guys coming off the big win at Atlanta. We’re just ready for race day and anything can happen at these Four-Wides. The track conditions are good, but today’s first round showed it can be tricky when the track gets hot. The track can get gooey and you’ve got to know how to navigate that. We went down nice and smooth in Q3 and we wanted to get down the track. I’m pumped for my guys and this team. We want to get past first round and see how far we can march along.”
