On this day in history, the titans of NASCAR, Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty finished 1-2, respectively, in the NASCAR Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway. It was just the second time in either of their historic careers the two had finished first or second in the same race – the first was at Atlanta on Nov. 2, 1986. Earnhardt would go on to win his third title in 1987.
