Nascar History: Sunday, April 9, 1961

On this day in history, NASCAR Hall of Famer Fred Lorenzen stole the NASCAR Cup Series win at Martinsville Speedway from Rex White, who led the first 118 laps, but Lorenzen took the lead with 31 to go and never relinquished it as weather brought out the caution and ultimately the end of the race on lap 149. It was the NASCAR Hall of Famer Lorenzen’s first win in the NASCAR Cup Series. He would go on to amass 26 total series wins in his career.
