Windom Drives Toyota To Victory At USAC Bubba Raceway Park

USAC

Chris Windom took the lead with six laps remaining and drove off to win night two of the USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series’ Winter Dirt Games at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Florida, Saturday.  Windom’s Tucker-Boat Motorsports (TBM) teammate Andrew Layser finished third as two Toyota drivers finished on the podium for the second straight night.

Windom’s win is the sixth for a Toyota-powered driver in 2020, coming from five different drivers. With the victory, Windom moves to the top of the USAC National Midget Series’ standings after placing second on Friday night.

Starting from the outside of the front row, Keith Kunz Motorsports (KKM) Toyota driver Cannon McIntosh went to the lead and was able to hold the top spot for three laps before Tanner Thorson was able to use a slider into turn one to take the point position on lap four.

After 10 laps of the 30-lap feature, it was Thorson, followed by McIntosh, Tyler Courtney, Windom and Petry Motorsports’ Kevin Thomas Jr.  McIntosh would relinquish second to Courtney on a slider, just prior to the race’s first caution flag coming out on lap 11.

As Thorson started to pull out to a comfortable lead, Windom had the car to watch as he passed both McIntosh and Courtney to claim second midway through the race.  Behind the leaders, Layser was on the move, climbing from his 13th starting position into the top five with 10 laps remaining. He then claimed fourth from McIntosh with six laps remaining, with Thorson, Windom, Courtney, Layser and McIntosh holding down the top five.

One lap later, the shape of the race would change drastically when Thorson slowed to a stop after appearing to lose an engine. That would give the lead to Windom as the field reverted back to six laps remaining due to the caution.

Windom would lead the field back to green, holding off a charge from Courtney, as Layser ran third, Mcintosh fourth and Thomas in fifth. With four to go, Thomas would slip by McIntosh to take fourth, but no one had anything for Windom as he went on to claim TBM’s second midget car win of the season, with Courtney, Layser, Thomas and McIntosh rounding out the top five.

Directly behind McIntosh was his three KKM Toyota teammates as Buddy Kofoid placed sixth, followed by Zeb Wise in seventh and Daison Pursley in eighth. Petry Motorsports’ Tanner Carrick placed tenth to give Toyota-powered cars eight of the top-ten finishing positions.

The USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series returns to action for the indoor Shamrock Classic at the Southern Illinois Center in Du Quoin, March 7.
