The 2019 racing season for the AMS Legends program concluded with a doubleheader on Atlanta Motor Speedway’s road course, putting Legends and Bandolero drivers’ road racing skills to the test.
On top of the challenge of navigating the left and right turns some divisions raced together: the Pro and Masters Legends and the Outlaws and Bandits Bandolero racers shared the track during their features.
In the first Pro/Masters mixed feature Cody Hall, of Griffin, swapped the lead with Jensen Jorgensen early and took the lead for good with five laps to go, while Tony Armbruster, of Covington, took the checkered in the Masters division. In the second feature Hall claimed back-to-back Pro victories while Ronnie Wehunt, of Canton, took the Masters win.
A dramatic finish highlighted the first Semi-Pro Legends feature, with Nick Woodall and Ricky Springer being knocked out of contention after contact in the final set of corners to the benefit of Jonathan Taylor, of Atlanta. In the second feature Woodall and Springer recovered to finish 1st and 2nd, respectively.
In the first combined Outlaws and Bandits feature Kelley Puckett took the Outlaws victory and Garrett Gumm claimed the checkered in the Bandits class. Ryan Younginer took the Outlaws victory in race 2 while Garrett Gumm completed the sweep in the Bandits division.
William Cox, of Raleigh, N.C., mastered the left and right turns of the infield en-route to a pair of victories in the two Young Lions feature races and Donovan Strauss, of Marietta, took both Rookie Bandoleros victories.
Once the final checkered flag dropped AMS Legends program competitors, crew members, and family gathered in Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Club One for the annual year-end banquet. During the ceremony the year’s top performers were recognized, including the Thursday Thunder champions, along with some special awards given to especially deserving drivers:
