Williams, Lane, Helton, Canter, Blessing capture Kingsport Speedway NASCAR wins

Nik Williams scored his fifth Late Model Stock win of the season and held serve with Zeke Shell in his pursuit of a first Kingsport Speedway track championship.

Williams, in the No. 32 Chevrolet, battled past defending track champion Shell in the No. 1 Ford which was held up by the slower car of Jimmy Acito on lap 19. Once out front, Williams pulled out to a 10-car length victory in the 60-lap feature.

Coming into the night with a nine-point lead in the championship standings, Williams, a 21-year-old from Chuckey, and Johnson City driver Shell both ended with 30 points. Shell picked up a bonus point for winning the point, while Williams finishing one spot ahead of him evened the score.

Bryson Dennis finished third as Wayne Hale and Derek Lane rounded out the top five on the 3/8-mile concrete oval.

MOD SQUADS

Trey Lane of Kingsport drove his No. 9 Dodge Challenger to an eighth win of the season in the Mod Street division. It was a highly competitive race with him outdueling Rusty Clendenin in the No. 27 Camaro for the top spot.

Alex Miller, Colby Higgins and Royce Peters were the rest of the top five finishers.

Kevin Canter of Abingdon, Va., in the Dale Earnhardt tribute paint scheme No. 3 Ford, rolled to his 14th win in 16 races for the Mod 4 division. Dennis Arnold, winner of the other two Mod 4 features, finished second. Billy Duty, Chris Amburgey and Jesse Amburgey rounded out the top five.

PURE DELIGHT

Kingsport’s Keith Helton hit double-digit wins, driving the orange No. 9 Saturn to his 10th win of the season in the Pure 4 division. Josh Detwiler finished second in the 21-car field ahead of Bucky Smith in the No. 99 machine. Kenny Absher, the most recent winner before Friday, wound up fourth with defending track champion Bruce Crumbley in fifth.

Bruce Blessing of Yuma, Va., drove his No. 10 Camaro to his second Pure Street win of the season. Blessing had finished runner-up to Tony Dockery in the last two Kingsport races, but powered his way to the front Friday night. Points leader Doug Austin finished second, followed by defending track champion Jay Swecker, Kevin Darnell and Dockery.

The race was red-flagged after the throttle hung on Ricky Payne’s car and he slammed hard into the turn 1 wall. Payne was shaken, but able to eventually get out of the car.

Three weeks remain on the track’s points schedule with another five-division program of races for Friday, Aug. 30
