Tanner Carrick finished third to lead Toyota at the USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship Pennsylvania Midget Week opener at Grandview Speedway, Tuesday. The third place is the second consecutive podium finish for the 17-year-old Carrick, who won the most recent USAC event at Sweet Springs Motorsports Complex.
It was Kevin Thomas Jr., though, who was the top running Toyota for much of the feature event as he fell in behind Chris Windom on the opening lap, with Jason McDougal in third, Tyler Courtney in fourth, Kyle Larson in fifth, Chad Boat in sixth and Carrick in seventh.
After 10 laps, Windom and Thomas continued to run in the top two, while Courtney moved up to third, followed by McDougal and Larson, with Carrick climbing up to sixth. The action would heat up just past the midway point of the 30-lap race, when Thomas made a charge at Windom, as Courtney stayed right behind him, with Larson and Carrick also in contention. Carrick would eventually claim fourth on lap 21.
Following a red flag on lap 24, Thomas would get shuffled back after the restart with Courtney and Carrick moving up to second and third. Windom would pull out to a comfortable lead as a wild scramble ensued for second with Courtney, Carrick, Larson and a fast-climbing Tanner Thorson.
A McDougal spin would bring out a caution on lap 29 and bunch the field, setting up a two-lap run to the finish where Windom would narrowly hold off Courtney and Carrick for the win. Thorson would finish fourth, earning the Hard Charger award after starting 13th, while Boat rounded out the top five in fifth.
Toyota drivers also would finish sixth through tenth. Thomas would finish sixth, followed by Tucker Klaasmeyer, Larson, Jerry Coons Jr. and Logan Seavey.
USAC’s Pennsylvania Midget Week continues Wednesday at Action Track USA in Kutztown.
