Kevin Currin and Jordan Pickrel will be in a bit of a unique situation this weekend along with the rest of their Pure Stock and Hornet competitors at South Boston Speedway.
They will be on a much larger stage than usual, supplying the local action in the whosyourdriver.org NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Twin 100s Saturday evening.
South Boston’s two lower divisions will be front-and-center, supplying support for the NASCAR K&N Series annual stop in Southside Virginia. The K&N Series will run twin 100-lap races while the Budweiser Pure Stocks will run a 30-lap event and the Budweiser Hornets will have a 15-lap race.
Pickrel has been chasing Nathan Crews in the early stages of the Pure Stock season. Crews has swept the two Pure Stock races with the 19-year-old Pickrel finishing second in the most recent race.
“The three-car has been pretty tough this season,” Pickrel said of Crews. “I think we’re going to go over Tuesday and test and make sure we’re ready to go. We look to build on some of the momentum from the last race.”
He also wants to make sure he and his team are dialed in for this unique chance for the support divisions.
“I think this is a really good opportunity that doesn’t come around extremely often, but when it does, it gives every lower division, be it Late Model or us, the chance to show off our talent a little bit,” said Pickrel. “Whenever that happens, it’s good. You never know what opportunity may be out there,”
Currin just wants to keep his hot streak alive.
“We’re going to go into this weekend like any other weekend,” said Currin, who leads the Hornets points battle. “We’ll just go out there and try to put on a good show. We’re just going to have fun and try to run up front. There’s no pressure … just trying to have fun.”
It’s certainly been fun for the Chase City driver so far this season. After finishing second in the season-opener Currin made a pass for the lead with four laps to go two weeks ago to pick up the victory and take over the points lead.
“It does seem like things have turned around for us,” said Currin.
Grandstand gates will open at 4:30 p.m. Saturday with qualifying scheduled for 5 p.m. An autograph session for drivers from all divisions will be held on the track at 6 p.m. with the first K&N 100-lapper taking the green flag at 7 p.m.
Tickets are just $10 in advance and $15 day of the race with children 12-and-under admitted free with a paid adult. Advance tickets may be purchased by calling 877.440.1540 or by stopping by the South Boston Speedway office 9 to 5, Monday through Friday.
Also, Friday’s test session, which runs from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., is open to the public at no charge.
