Thomas Leads Toyota At USAC Kokomo GP

Toyota Racing

Kevin Thomas Jr., led the first 14 of 30 laps on the way to a fifth-place finish as the top Toyota in the opening night of the USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series’ Kokomo Grand Prix on the quarter-mile high-banked oval at the Kokomo Speedway, Friday night.

The fifth-place showing marks Thomas’ third top-five finish in four races this season. He earlier scored a pair of runner-up finishes to open the season in Ocala.

Starting from the pole position, Thomas quickly moved out front and led much of the early going with Thomas Meseraull, Jason McDougal, Chris Windom, C.J. Leary and Tyler Courtney rounding out the top six.

After 10 laps, Thomas continued to hold the lead with Courtney having moved up to second. He remained in the lead until lap 15 when Courtney would overtake him heading into turn one. Thomas then ran in the second spot through lap 23, but a bobble on lap 24 resulted in a three-way battle with McDougal and Windom with McDougal taking over second and then Windham would take away the third position one lap later. Thomas would eventually come home in fifth as Courtney took top honors on the night.

Following Thomas in sixth-place was Logan Seavey, with Dillon Welch, who established a new track record in qualifying, finishing eighth, C.J. Leary in ninth and Tanner Carrick in tenth as Toyota-powered entries captured five of the top-10 finishing positions. Overall, 13 Toyota drivers qualified for the 24-car A Main out of 32 entries.

The USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series concludes its Kokomo Speedway double-header on Saturday night.
