“Back Porch Smokers” Claim Best Overall at Talladega Superspeedway’s 14th Annual AWF Wild Game Cook-Off

Shrimp Creole, Bob White Delight and Venison Flats, that’s just a few of the delicious dishes that were brought to the table by some of the best backyard chefs in the Yellowhammer State during the Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF) Wild Game Cook-Off at Talladega Superspeedway this past Saturday, March 9.

The Back Porch Smokers claimed the top prize of “Best Overall” with their delicious Woody’s Smokin’ Phoenix, all prepared in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Garage at the historic 2.66-mile track. The cook team consisting of Cody Bishop, Jared Bishop, Nate Willis and Michael Lowrance, will be invited to the state finals held at Lanark in Millbrook, AL on August 10, 2019, to compete for the title of AWF 2019 Wild Game Cook-Off State Champion.

The winning teams were determined by local media personalities and celebrities who served as judges. They included: Jim Dunaway and Ryan Brown (WJOX 94.5 The Roundtable Co-Hosts); Chris Renkel (CBS 42 TV); Matt Murphy and Andrea Lindenberg (Talk 99.5 Matt and Aunie Hosts); Greg Burgess (The Rick and Bubba Show Host); Mike Dubberly and Christina Chambers (FOX6 TV); Guy Rawlings and Lisa Crane (NBC 13 TV); Jeff Speegle (ABC 33/40 TV); Landrum Roberts (WJOX 94.5 3 Man Front Co-Host); DJ Ricky Aaron (106.9 The Eagle Personality); and Chip Moore (VP – Head of Operations at First Bank of Alabama).

Fish Division: 
First Place – Wyld Child Catering consisting of Leonard Hill, Joe Lewis, Maya Moman and Alex Banks cooking Ocho Bacon Wrapped Shrimp

Game Division: 
First Place – First Bank of Alabama consisting Julie Thompson, Scott Carter, Brandon Freeman and Rob Skelton cooking Deer Spikes

Fowl Division: 
First Place – Back Porch Smokers consisting of Cody Bishop, Jared Bishop, Nate Willis and Michael Lowrance cooking Woody’s Smokin’ Phoenix

Youth Division: 
First Place – Los Banditos consisting Jasmine Uribe, Isaiah Mesa, Isabella Tucker and Elizabeth Martinez cooking Light Yo Sass on Fire

Pot Luck Division: 
First Place – Biscuit and Gravy consisting Shanna Thompson and Daniel Thompson cooking Deer Just Chillin’

Representatives from the Alabama Army National Guard presented the People’s Choice award to Dee’s Nuts.

The purpose of AWF Wild Game Cook-Offs is to supply a place for AWF members to interact, for non-members to learn more about the AWF, and to provide the opportunity to raise funds to support AWF and its programs and projects. The Cook-Offs also demonstrate that sportsmen/women utilize the wild game and fish they harvest and cook it with care, skill and expertise to produce great table fare. 

The AWF, established by sportsmen in 1935, is the state’s oldest and largest citizens’ conservation organization. NASCAR action returns to Talladega Superspeedway, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year along with Transformation – The Talladega Superspeedway Infield Project presented by Graybar, for its spring tripleheader weekend, April 26-28. The General Tire 200 for the ARCA Menards Series will kick off the action-packed weekend on Friday, April 26. The MoneyLion 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series event is set for Saturday, April 27, with the weekend’s anchor event, the GEICO 500 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race scheduled for Sunday, April 28.
