Tucker Klaasmeyer finished second with Tanner Carrick third and Zach Daum fourth as Toyota-powered drivers captured three of the top-four finishing positions at the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League’s feature at the Spoon River Speedway in Canton, Ill, Saturday night.
Klaasmeyer now has registered a series-high 17 top-five finishes, including six wins, in POWRi competition this season.
Starting from the pole position, it was Daum who took the early lead running the low side of the race track with Klaasmeyer falling in behind him and Carrick in third.
Just as he did Friday night in Jacksonville, the 16-year-old Carrick would charge early, first over-taking Klaasmeyer and then reeling in Daum for the lead as he worked the high side of the track.
Carrick maintained the point position as the laps began to wind down, behind him Zeb Wise started moving up through the field into third and then began challenging Daum for second with Daum running low and Wise running the high side. In front of them, Carrick was being held up by lapped traffic, allowing Daum and Wise to make it a three-car battle for the top spot. The leaders went three-wide down the backstretch with Daum going low to take the lead at the stripe as Wise and Carrick ran side-by-side on the top with all three cars less than a car length apart.
It would be short-lived lead for Daum, as Wise would take the point position on the following lap as Daum and Carrick both went to the bottom and Wise powered up top. As the three cars battled for the lead, Klaasmeyer took advantage to reel in the leaders while running the high side. He would eventually move past Carrick and then Daum to take second.
Klaasmeyer began to close on Wise with just two laps remaining. On the final circuit, Klaasmeyer would dive to the bottom to temporarily take the lead through turns three and four, but Wise stayed on the top and was able to power back past Klaasmeyer for the win. Carrick earned his second consecutive podium finish with a third, while Daum was fourth.
Ryan Robinson placed sixth, with Sam Johnson seventh, Logan Seavey ninth and Blake Carrick tenth as Toyota drivers took home seven of the top-10 finishing positions.
Klaasmeyer stretched his POWRi point lead to 570 points over Robinson with only five races remaining. Daum continues to hold down the third spot as just four drivers remain mathematically in the championship hunt.
The POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League returns to Illinois for a pair of races on October 12-13, kicking off with a Friday night show at Jacksonville Speedway, followed by the Meents Memorial at Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville on Saturday.
