Brown and Measmer Reverse Bad Luck at Bowman Gray

 Last week, Bobby Measmer and
Jonathan Brown left the race early and headed to the pits with
mechanical issues. On Saturday, they left the race with the checkered.
Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem won Saturday’s first 25-lapper for the
Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series. Concord resident Bobby Measmer brought
home the victory in the second 25-lap race – his first win ever at the
Madhouse.
Lee Jeffreys of Wallburg was the fastest qualifier, placing him on the
pole for the start of the first Modified race. Jonathan Brown turned the
second fastest time and started second. As the green flag waved, the two
powered forward, beating and banging for the lead until Brown was the
one who emerged in the top spot. “I really hate that me and Lee got
together on that start. I think we were both just going for the same
real estate,” said Brown.
The #22 of Brown then held on to take the win. It was a welcome change
of events for Brown, who has suffered for much of the season with bad
luck and mechanical problems. “We have literally had the worst luck this
year. I think this is the second race we’ve finished out of four,” said
Brown. “The car’s pretty good. I think we can definitely make it a lot
better, and I think these boys are in trouble this year.”
The “Madhouse Scramble” sent Frank Fleming of Mount Airy to the pole
for the second race. Fleming shot out to claim the lead on the start,
but Lady Luck was wreaking havoc throughout the field behind him. Points
leader Burt Myers of Walnut Cove had a run-in with Jeremy Gerstner. Tim
Brown of Tobaccoville fell off the pace and then set off a collision
with Randy Butner of Pfafftown.
Bobby Measmer, who started in ninth, climbed his way through the field
and was eventually pressuring Fleming for the lead. “We brought our
lucky horseshoe tonight that one of my cousins gave me. It must’ve
worked,” said Measmer. “We missed a big wreck there with Burt and Jeremy
– got around Tim. It was just me and Frank then. And on the restart, I
saw his car was really tight. I got inside of him a few times and
finally completed the pass.”
After passing Fleming for the lead, Measmer went on to take the
checkered. It was his first win at the legendary quarter-mile, making
him the 135th driver to win a featured event at the Stadium and adding
him to the list of fabled winners such as Richard Petty, Junior Johnson,
and Glen Wood. “To finally put my name on that list is pretty awesome,”
said Measmer. “The car has been really good. We just hadn’t had the end
results. To finally seal that deal tonight and put our name on that list
– I’m ready to get more wins now.”
In the Texas Steak & Tap House Sportsman Series, Dylan Ward of
Winston-Salem was leading the way in the first 20-lapper. He seemed
impossible to beat, but mechanical troubles arose and took him out of
the race on lap 19. Zack Clifton of Walkertown moved up into the lead
and went on to win.
Kevin Neal of Walkertown took the checkered in the second Sportsman
race. He kept his nose clean at the front while Derek Stoltz of
Walkertown and Tommy Neal of Walkertown battled behind him.
Spencer Martin of Winston-Salem was the fastest qualifier for the Law
Offices of John Barrow Street Stock Series on Saturday. He battled with
Jacob Creed to grab the lead away on lap 48 in the Whelen Street Stock
50, claiming the checkered in the Street Stock Division’s largest and
most prestigious race of the season.
In the Q104.1 Stadium Stock Series, A.J. Sanders of Mocksville and
Brandon Brendle of Winston-Salem each brought home a win.
