Lumbee Smokers Win Best Overall at Talladega Superspeedway’s 13th Annual Wild Game Cook-Off

Deer Poppers, Peaches and Pig, Smoked Duck Pot Pie, Oh My! These were just a few of the delicious dishes that 37 Cook-Off teams from all over the state showcased during the 13th annual Alabama Wildlife Federation Wild Game Cook-Off at Talladega Superspeedway this past Saturday, with Lumbee Smokers taking home the top prize of “Best Overall.”

The winning dish, prepared in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series garage at the famed 2.66-mile venue, was Southwest Chips and Turkey Steak. The cook team for Lumbee Smokers consisted of Bracy Cummings, Jr., Bracy Cummings, Sr., Derrick Cummings and Tim Borden. As a result of their win, Lumbee Smokers are invited to the state finals held in Millbrook, AL on August 4, 2018 to compete for the title of AWF 2018 Wild Game Cook-Off State Champion.

The Cook-Off teams battled it out for the title of “Best Overall” in front of nearly 1000 members and guests in attendance, all of whom got to sample each delicacy, enjoy music and entertainment and bid on a variety of auction items.

Judges for the event were a “who’s who” of local media personalities and celebrities that included: Andrea Lindenberg and Matt Murphy (Talk 99.5 Matt and Aunie Hosts), Zac Johnson (Yellowhammer Radio), Cheryl Wray (AL.com), Greg Burgess (WZZK The Rick and Bubba Show host), Stu McCann (ABC 33/40 TV), Mike Dubberly and Rick Karle (WBRC 6 TV), Ryan Brown (WJOX 94.5 The Roundtable Co-Host), Guy Rawlings and Lisa Crane (NBC 13 TV), Nic Gulas, Chris Renkel and Ashley Gann (CBS 42 TV) and Chip Moore (VP – Head of Operations at First Bank of Alabama).

Fish Division:
First Place – Chi Grillers including Todd Jackson cooking Shrimp & Pasta Salad w/ Salmon Bacon

 

Game Division:
First Place – Dream Catchers including Anita Cummings, Beth Raley, Kris Raley and Mandy Borden cooking Peaches and Pig

 

Fowl Division:
First Place – Lumbee Smokers including Bracy Cummings, Jr., Bracy Cummings, Sr., Derrick Cummings and Tim Borden cooking a Southwest Chips and Turkey Steak

 

Youth Division:
First Place – Little Jokers cooking Turkey Roulade

 

Pot Luck Division:
First Place – Chevy Team including Jeff Parris, Anita Parris, Eric Parris and Chelsey Parris cooking Jack-a-lope Chili

Wild Critter Cookers

 

Best Presentation:
First Place – Co-Op Cut Ups including Kirk Green, Jimmy Sims, Kristy Seamon and Jeremy Hicks cooking Racking Up Lasagna.

 

The purpose of the AWF Wild Game Cook-Offs is to supply a place for AWF members to interact, for non-members to learn more about AWF and to provide the opportunity to raise funds to support AWF and its programs and projects. The Cook-Offs also demonstrate that sportsmen/women utilize the wild game and fish they harvest and cook it with care, skill and expertise to produce great table fare.
